On Monday, December 5, a federal judge issued summary judgement in favor of the American Hospital Association (AHA) and three member hospitals and ordered the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to eliminate the backlog of Medicare claims currently pending at the administrative law judge (ALJ) level within the next four years. This decision marks the close of an epic battle between the AHA and HHS, and marks a victory for the healthcare industry as a whole.
Then, on Wednesday, December 7, the Senate voted 94-5 to pass the sweeping 21st Century Cures Act. The bill will now move to President Obama's desk to be signed into law. The Cures Act is a combination of many healthcare-related bills, and it will bring relief for DME suppliers - but suppliers must also prepare for an influx of activity and significant resource consumption.
