Headlines in today’s papers read like a script from a Hollywood blockbuster – reporting on data breaches, malware, hackers, and the darknet. This week in Tucson, AZ, Banner Health suffered a cyberattack that compromised nearly 3.7 million records. In February of this year, a Los Angeles hospital paid attackers 40 bitcoins (or nearly $17,000) for the decryption key to their own data that was taken hostage by ransomware. And, last year, Anthem took the prize for the largest data breach in healthcare history when 78.8 million member records were compromised. While the news stories are alarming, simple, affordable steps can be taken to mitigate your risk for data breaches.
