There was a time when we advised the key to denial management was education, experience, and expertise. And we practiced what we preached…until it almost killed us.
True, understanding the reimbursement rules is important to denial resolution. And what you don’t already have, you can and should acquire with our Denial Basics event. But to what end? Here is the simple but not-so-obvious conclusion we found in our on work:
Working denials is probably creating more denials.
Patient interactions are complex and extend far beyond the claim line level, but working denials remains a touch point activity. “I ‘worked’ 100 denials” means nothing more than “I touched 100 denials in some manner and left a note without any correlation to the desired outcome.” The desired outcome, for those listening at home, is not just payment resolution of that one claim, but the avoidance of denials like it in the future. The alternative, or undesirable outcome, is an infinitely expanding denial volume that ultimately collapses. That is not a scare tactic; it is math.
Almost immediately, you can get better results with less effort if you are willing to reconsider your approach and strategy.
